Martial Arts - Can opposite sex couples train well together?

(I'm talking about people in a relationship, not just males and females.)

How does it affect sparring? Is it easy to pretend you're going to strike your mate?

Does it matter which martial art?Martial Arts - Can opposite sex couples train well together?
The biggest issue is the weight difference between males and females. If you are about the same size and same strength then it shouldn't be an issue as long as you are both okay with it.Martial Arts - Can opposite sex couples train well together?
It matters less about the martial art that you take - and more about the personality of the people involved. I've seen a number of couples take classes together who enjoy themselves greatly, and tell great stories of random instances of training that they do at home together.

One of my favorite stories was a couple who - when on their honeymoon - the husband kicked her out of the bed when he was asleep. Luckily, the wife found it really funny - and for these personality types it's just great!

Personally, I think it makes sparring that much more interesting. Here you are, working out with a person with whom you have an overwhelming interest is how well they progress. As you get older and start having a family - being able to protect that family becomes a driving reason to improve. Having a direct influence on improving her (or his) ability to defend themselves is even better.

Plus, it can make argument resolution quite a lot of fun - but man, you have to make sure that her coworkers (and yours) know that you take a martial arts class together :-)
Karate - my sensai (female) and her partner (male) were at the dojo 3x weekly and sensai was an amazing teacher - her partner was a pupil like us - and I believe that their relationship was strengthened by their karate experiences together. She would often choose her husband to demonstrate an aggressive move and they were both sooooo comfortable with it. So, I guess it depends on you and your partner's attitude about the art that you are pursuing........
i did material arts for nine years, and we had to train with the opposite sex. it is good for a girl to train with a guy because guys are stronger than girls, and will give them a better idea of a ';real'; fight which will hopefully never happen. tae kwon do is pretty good. There is no pretending in sparring. either u do it or not.
