In the US.. is it a big deal for new couples to do their Christmas shopping together?

When do unmarried couples start giving Christmas gifts to others as one single unit? Is it a big deal to decide to do that or is it a norm or not at all?

So suppose Jack and Jill are a couple but not married. Can they buy one gift for Jack's mother and they both give it together? Or does Jack buy one thing and Jill another? This question is specific to the United States actually - just trying to understand the culture of gift-giving during Christmas here. Thanks. In the US.. is it a big deal for new couples to do their Christmas shopping together?
If you are exclusive, it's perfectly acceptable to give a gift as a couple. This way, you don't have to do as much shopping. Also, you can spend more on one gift together and hopefully get something the recipient will like better. I don't know of anyone who is married (or otherwise in a committed relationship) who give separate gifts. In the US.. is it a big deal for new couples to do their Christmas shopping together?
If Jack and Jill are dating exclusively, sure, they can buy one gift and give it to anyone and sign it from ';merry christmas, love jack and jill.'; They will have to be ready for others to ask, ';so when are you getting married?'; Gift giving as a couple denotes that these have a serious relationship.
It really depends on what the gift is and how personal it is. My boyfriend and I have been together for two Christmases and we discussed the possibility of giving gifts from the both of us this past holiday. It didn't work for our parents, we each gave our moms jewelry, but we did give from the both of us for siblings and stuff. He pitched in for my dad's gift and I got a gift for both of his parents.
