Nope...first of all, only the government can force you to pay child support. Second of all, sperm donors are anonymous and don't have any rights or responsibilities toward any child.
I heard of one case in Canada (?) where a sperm donor did have to pay child support...he did it through unofficial means (turkey baster lol) and so he wasn't considered a sperm donor in the eyes of the law, so the kid counted as his. Weird but true, I don't know if he was ever able to fix it or not.Should lesbian couples be able to force the sperm donor of their kids pay child support?
Did some of the people above even bother to read the story? He *wasn't* a sperm bank donor, he was an involved friend who the children recognised as their father (they caklled him Papa), which makes this issue much less clear cut.
If the guy wasn't dead, I'd say as long as he got all the status and rights of a father... visitation, decision making, etc. The death further complicates matters.
A sperm bank donar will obviously not be forced to make payments. And neither will most sperm donors (it mentions protection in other states). This is an odd case, made odder by his obvious involvment with the kids.
Personally, I'm against sperm donation regardless. How would women feel if there was a way to grow babies in an artificial womb and men were commissioning their own children without a mother (not an unrealistic thought given advances in medicine)? In my own opinion I don't think anything has done more to detract from fatherhood than the notion that a woman has a right to have a child, regardless of whether she is capable of holding down a relationship. It takes a man and a woman to make a baby. I hear that phrase so often to refer to a father who has fathered children naturally '... he's just the sperm donor'.
Feel free to thumbs down me but I think if you want to lead a gay lifestyle you must accept this means you are not going to have children, if you can't do the deed then you don't get the goods so to speak. I'm not religous and am not against gays and lesbians, I just think we must accept the limits of our own biology.
To be honest I do think sperm donors should be made responsible for the children they have brought into this world - maybe then they would think twice before making their deposit and destroying the male role in society.
Absolutely NOT! He is the donor, not the father. Maybe biological but not in the picture. Lesbians or who ever tries, will scare off donors, then what will they do. I think it would be wrong. If you get sperm from a donor then you should be all on your own.
That's the dumbest idea I've ever heard. If he pays child support, then technically, the kid is still his, and technically not in the sole custody of you and your partner.
In my opinion, while genetically it may be his child, it really is not his child. he did not raise it, he did not nessasarily want it or be willing tocare for it. so, no.
